Kevin Gausman vs. Pierce Johnson
The San Francisco Giants finish off this four game series against the San Diego Padres today, hoping to take the series and gain back some ground on the Los Angeles Dodgers, who do not play today.
Taking the mound for the Giants is Kevin Gausman, who enters today’s game with a 2.65 ERA, 2.87 FIP, with 201 strikeouts to 48 walks in 170 innings pitched. Gausman’s last start was Saturday’s blowout win over the Chicago Cubs, in which he allowed eight hits and three runs, striking out nine in six innings.
He’ll be facing off against Pierce Johnson, who enters today’s game with a 2.98 ERA, 3.48 FIP with 67 strikeouts to 24 walks in 51 innings pitched. This will be Johnson’s second career start, being used as an opener. His last appearance was in relief against the Giants on Tuesday, in which he allowed one hit and a run, striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
Some pre-game notes: The Captain himself, Brandon Belt, will be batting cleanup today after hitting a home run in four of the last six games. Also, the Giants optioned Jay Jackson back to Sacramento, and called up Sammy Long.
