The short answer is no. The longer answer is also probably no.
Good morning, baseball fans!
Earlier this week Matt LaFever of SFGate published an article noting that a summer camp called the Youth Outdoor Sports Camp that had previously operated at the Six Point Ranch will no longer be able to use the property.
The ranch is a hunting property that spans roughly 4,000 acres of Mendocino and Lake Counties that was bought by San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey.
At first glance, that seems a bit odd. Kids and outdoor activities kind of seems like something that’s right up Posey’s alley. The article featured disappointed comments from the organizers of the summer camp; and is (in my opinion) kind of skewed to make Posey look like the bad guy.
But is he?
When you look a little bit closer, that’s maybe not the case.
First, the camp has been in operation for 26 years, with only five years taking place at the ranch. So clearly the camp was operating just fine before it started using that property.
Second, hosting a youth camp that includes activities such as archery and hunting is maybe not the best idea in terms of liability issues. Sure, today it’s “Buster Posey evil for telling kids to get off his lawn.” But next year it could be “Tiny child injured in hunting mishap caused by Buster Posey’s property.”
I can see why he maybe doesn’t want to risk that.
To my jaded sensibilities, it reads more like disappointment from people who thought they were going to get to either meet Posey or say they spent time at his property.
At the end of the day, I don’t fault Posey for opting out.
