The skip ain’t skipping town.
The San Francisco Giants may be mired in a slump that will require some changes, but the manager isn’t one of them. On Tuesday, a few hours ahead of their road game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Giants announced that they had picked up manager Bob Melvin’s club option for the 2026 season, ensuring that he’ll keep leading his hometown team through next season (or at least be paid through next season).
Buster Posey chose the funniest timing imaginable for the announcement, as the Giants are mired in one of their worst slumps in recent memory. The team has lost six of their last seven games, which includes a home sweep against the lowly Miami Marlins, and a series loss to the paltry Chicago White Sox.
But perhaps the team wasn’t going for funny timing, but rather for meaningful timing. Posey has shown more patience than the previous regime — for better and for worse — and isn’t quick to move on from people, be they coaches or players. The Giants may be slumping, but at 45-40 they’re still firmly outpacing expectations for the seasons. Perhaps the timing is meant to send a message of confidence to Melvin, the staff, and the players that the higher-ups believe in them.
Or perhaps it means nothing. Either way, Melvin will stick out the rest of the season, which is no surprise at all, and come back for a third year, which isn’t exactly a shocker, either.

Here’s the Giants statement in full, as announced on social media:
The San Francisco Giants announced today that they have exercised the 2026 option for manager Bob Melvin.
“Having the chance to work alongside Bob every day, we’re really fortunate to have such an experienced leader and one of the most well-respected managers in baseball,” said Ginats President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey. “His leadership, preparation, and connection with our players have been invaluable, and we believe he’s the right person to continue guiding this team forward.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this group,” said Manager Bob Melvin. “I believe in what we’re building here, and I appreciate the confidence that the Giants ownership group, Greg, Buster, Larry, Zack and the rest of the Giants’ organization have shown in me and our staff. We have a lot of unfinished business this year, and I’m looking forward to the work ahead.”
Melvin, 63, is in his second season as manager of the San Francisco Giants, his 22nd overall as a big-league manager. In those 22 seasons, Melvin has guided his teams to eight Postseason appearances that include four division titles and two trips to the League Championship Series (2007 with Arizona and 2022 with San Diego). He was also a bench coach on the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks club that won the World Series.
As a Major League manager, Melvin has garnered three Manager of the Year awards (2007 with Arizona and 2012 & 2018 with Oakland) and owns a lifetime managerial winning percentage of .515, compiling a 1,642-1,547 record during the regular season. His 1,642 regular season wins rank 21st all-time and are third-most among active managers behind Bruce Bochy (2,212) and Terry Francona (1,994).
