The San Francisco Giants selected Rutgers outfielder Trevor Cohen with the 85th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. While Cohen was expected to be a mid-round pick, the Giants selected him notably higher than most expert rankings would have anticipated, making it possible that the two sides have a verbal agreement on a below-slot agreement. The slot for the pick is $935,300.
Cohen was a three-year starter at Rutgers, demonstrating elite contact ability that forms the foundation of his carrying hit tool. Cohen hit .387/.460/.523 with 24 doubles, a triple, two home runs, 19 steals (22 attempts), 30 walks, and 15 strikeouts in 273 plate appearances this spring. Over his career, he hit .338/.415/.430 in 163 games with 39 doubles, four home runs, 39 steals, 80 walks, and 62 strikeouts.
Cohen has good, but unexceptional speed, but scouts are split on whether he could be a viable center fielder as a pro. If not, Cohen will need to really maximize his hit-tool given his limited power potential. Cohen has consistently demonstrated elite contact skills, including against velocity, which could leave room for the Giants scouting staff to believe he could tap into more power with some adjustments.
