The Giants co-ace will not be available for the All-Star Game, so David Peterson will fill in.
One of the San Francisco Giants All-Stars will not be appearing in this year’s midsummer classic. Robbie Ray is scheduled to start the Giants final game before the All-Star break. Since players cannot pitch in the game on short rest, Ray was replaced by New York Mets southpaw David Peterson, the league announced on Thursday. It is Peterson’s first All-Star selection.
Ray has recorded a 2.63 ERA (3.45 FIP) with 122 strikeouts and 42 walks in 113 innings pitched (19 starts). This was Ray’s second-career All-Star Game selection, and his first selection since 2017 (although he was an obvious All-Star snub when he won the American League Cy Young in 2021). The Giants have been rewarded handsomely for gambling on Ray’s recovery from UCL surgery two offseasons ago, trading Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani to the Mariners for Ray. Haniger and DeSclafani have both been non-factors since the deal.
Peterson has spent his entire professional career with the Mets, since he was selected in the first round of the 2017 Draft out of Oregon. Peterson steadily climbed the minor-league ranks before making his big-league debut in 2020. He immediately established himself as a solid back of the rotation arm, but has struggled with health and inconsistency throughout his career. While the Mets could have easily moved on from the lefty, they gave Peterson a chance to develop through the growing pains and finally seemed to put it all together last season.
In 2024, Peterson had a 2.90 ERA (3.67 FIP) in 21 starts and he picked up where he left off this year. So far, he recorded a 3.06 ERA (3.37 FIP) with 93 strikeouts and 37 walks in 109 innings pitched (18 starts). Now, the 29-year old will be able to call himself an All-Star.
