A round up of the San Francisco Giants Minor League affiliates.

The San Francisco Giants eight affiliates had just four games on Monday, and they lost all four of them. Do you care? No, because the Major League team beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, and nothing else matters when that happens.

But let’s dive into the 0-4 day on the farm.

AAA Sacramento (27-37)

Sacramento River Cats lost to the Round Rock Express (Rangers) 7-5
Box score

The River Cats took a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning against the Express, but RHP Silvino Bracho gave up a pair of runs in both the eighth and ninth innings — half earned, half unearned.

It wasn’t a particularly interesting offensive game for Sacramento, though second baseman Peter Maris homered to quietly raise his OPS to .974. No one is talking about Maris’ season, despite the strong numbers, and that’s a sign of the organization’s depth right now: Maris is the depth for the depth (Arismendy Alcántara) for the depth (Jason Vosler, Mauricio Dubón, and Thairo Estrada), for the team.

The two Giants with recent time on the MLB team — shortstop Dubón and catcher Joey Bart (No. 2 CPL) — both went 0-4 with a pair of strikeouts. The offense drew just 2 walks all day, with right fielder Drew Robinson contributing one of them in his second to last game as a professional baseball player.

Robinson also had an awesome highlight defensive play, and made the SportsCenter Top 10. What an awesome moment.

ACL Orange (6-10)

ACL Giants Orange lost to the Rockies 11-9
Box score

The Giants Orange squad couldn’t come out on top but it was certainly not the fault of shortstop Aeverson Arteaga (No. 28 CPL, 18, 2019 J2). Arteaga continued his absolute tear of the Arizona Complex League, going 3-5 with a double and a pair of home runs. He’s now at a 1.313 OPS in 63 plate appearances this season, and permission has been granted to dream big.

Designated hitter Grant McCray (No. 26 CPL, 20, 2019 3rd round) was the only other Giant with a multi-hit game, as he went 2-3 for the first hits of his young season.

The pitching wasn’t good, as you can probably surmise from the score, and RHP Cristian Acosta (21, 2017 J2) gave up 6 earned runs in 2 innings.

ACL Black (9-7)

ACL Giants Black lost to the Athletics 6-0
Box score

A very rough offensive game for the Giants Black team, as they mustered just 3 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 12 times. Third baseman Yorlis Rodriguez (22, 2017 J2) had a double for the team’s only extra-base hit, but they couldn’t find a way to score.

None of the team’s pitchers had particularly good games, but they all did well with the strikeout, with RHP Rafael Martinez (21, 2016 J2), striking out 5 in 4 innings, LHP Marvin Brown (20, 2018 J2) striking out 2 in 0.2 innings, and RHP Jose Mullings (21, 2018 J2) striking out 6 in 3.1 innings.

DSL Black (3-3)

DSL Giants Black lost to the Rangers2 4-2 (7 innings)
Box score

The Giants were done in by the sixth inning, when they gave up all 4 runs. And also done in by the whole inability to score more than 2 runs thing.

The offense did a strong job suppressing strikeouts, with just 6 on the day, but were unable to find an extra-base hit. Center fielder Mauricio Pierre (17, 2020 J2), shortstop Yeison Lemos (18, 2019 J2), and right fielder Estanlin Cassiani (18, 2019 J2) all had multi-hit games, with Pierre (.840 OPS) and Lemos (1.171 OPS) having the team’s runs batted in.

It was not a good day for the bullpen, but the starting pitching was strong. RHP Jose Rojas (17, 2020 J2) pitched 5 scoreless innings, giving up 2 hits and 0 walks while striking out 5. Rojas’ season line is now 10 innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 0 runs, and 10 strikeouts. Nice start to his professional career.
