A round up of the San Francisco Giants Minor League affiliates.
Monday is an off day for the the San Francisco Giants AA, High-A, and Low-A affiliates, so a rather quiet day on the farm.
Let’s recap it.
AAA Sacramento (23-29)
Sacramento River Cats lost to the Las Vegas Aviators (A’s) 4-3
It was a rough, walk-off loss for the AAA crew on Monday, as Sacramento took a 3-2 lead into the 9th inning. Trevor Gott took the mound for the final inning, and was riding a 7-game streak of not allowing an earned run. A single and 2-out home run later and the streak was over — and so was the game.
The River Cats didn’t muster much offensively, with 7 hits, 4 walks, and 11 strikeouts. The best news from the offense was that catcher Joey Bart (No. 2 CPL) returned, after missing a little time due to getting hit by a pitch. It’s good to know that there wasn’t a serious injury there, and Bart hit 1-3 with a double, a walk, and no strikeouts.
Another strong relief performance from 33-year old right-hander Jay Jackson, as he pitched 2 perfect innings while striking out 3. Jackson has only appeared in 6 games due to the injury that sidelined him at the start of the season, but it’s hard to argue with this line: 9 innings, 2 hits, 0 walks, 15 strikeouts, 0 runs.
Kervin Castro (No. 25 CPL) also had a scoreless outing to lower his ERA to 3.22.
ACL Orange (3-3)
The middle of the lineup struggled mightily for ACL Orange, with the No. 4 and 5 hitters, center fielder George Bell and DH Rayner Santana (No. 41 CPL) going a combined 0-10 with 8 strikeouts and 0 walks. But the hitters around them were awesome, with 6 walks to just 7 strikeouts, and 9 hits — 7 of which went for extra bases.
The offensive star was shortstop Aeverson Arteaga (No. 28 CPL) — an 18-year old 2019 J2 signing — who went 2-4 with a homer, a double, and a walk. The all-around star was left fielder Kwan Adkins — a 24-year old 2018 30th-round pick — who hit 2-4 with a home run and a walk, stole a base, and had an outfield assist.
Exciting prospect Manuel Mercedes — an 18-year old 2019 J2 signing — struggled in his second start of the year, allowing 8 hits, 3 walks, and 3 runs in 4 innings, while striking out 3. His ERA is 6.00.
ACL Black (4-2)
ACL Giants Black beat the Rockies 4-0 (7 innings)
Solid game for ACL Black, led by a pair of home runs from left fielder Najee Gaskins — a 23-year old 2019 20th-round pick.
Luis Alexander Basabe (No. 33 CPL) made another rehab start, and drew a walk in 2 plate appearances while also playing in the field.
A pair of pitchers combined for a 7-inning 1-hitter: Lefty Esmerlin Vinicio — an 18-year old 2019 J2 signing — pitched 5 innings, allowing 1 hit and 5 walks while striking out 4. And righty Jose Cruz — a 21-year old 2017 J2 signing — pitched 2 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts.
