The Giants got the deadline started with a bang back in June, but will it end with a whimper?
The San Francisco Giants got the MLB trade deadline season started with a bang last month when they acquired Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox. The Giants have steadily fallen in the standings since the blockbuster move, however, and it’s now unclear what president of baseball operations Buster Posey will do at his first deadline. While buying is more in line with the front office’s contention goals, reports have begun to suggest that selling is on the table.
We’ll update this tracker with all the latest moves tied to the Giants as they go down:
July 30th
7:00 am Pacific: Giants will listen to offers on their relievers
ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Buster Olney report that the Giants, mired in a mega-slump, will now start fielding offers on their relievers. Camilo Doval would seem to be the Giant most likely to be included in a trade.
8:49 am Pacific: White Sox trade former Giants OF Austin Slater to Yankees
While there’s no direct tie to the Giants in this deal, Slater was a mainstay in San Francisco for eight big-league seasons. He’s been a fine role player in Chicago, but advanced metrics suggest he’s been extremely unlucky. Now he’ll get a chance to contribute under the bright lights of Yankees stadium.
11:52 am Pacific: Taylor Rogers heads to Pittsburgh
The Giants opponent on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates, traded their third baseman, Ke’Bryan Hayes, to the Cincinnati Reds. One of the players that the Pirates are getting from the reds is lefty reliever Taylor Rogers, who pitched for the Giants in 2023 and 2024, and is the twin brother of Tyler Rogers. While he won’t be with Pittsburgh for the series finale, Rogers will get to face his brother and his old team next week when the Giants visit the Pirates.
1:11 pm Pacific: Giants trade Tyler Rogers to the Mets
It appears that the Giants are going to sell, at least a little. Just a few innings into Wednesday’s game, it was reported that right-handed reliever Tyler Rogers had been traded to the New York Mets. In return, the Giants have received right-handed pitching prospect Blade Tidwell, outfield prospect Drew Gilbert, and righty José Buttó from the Mets. Tidwell, who has made the Majors, was the No. 7 prospect in New York’s system, per Fangraphs, while Gilbert, who was ranked No. 8, is in AAA. Buttó is a 27-year old in his fourth MLB season, and has a 3.64 ERA this year working in relief.
1:28 pm Pacific: More relievers likely to be moved
After Tyler Rogers was traded, Alex Pavlovic reported that the expectation is that other players will be moved. Pavlovic reports that Camilo Doval has been made available.
2:05 pm Pacific: Justin Verlander is being shopped
Per Jon Morosi, the Giants have made starter Justin Verlander available in trades. It doesn’t sound like anything is imminent, with Morosi stating that “out of respect” to Verlander, they’re open to trades that make sense for both the player and the team.
