Game 3 is upon us.
The San Francisco Giants made it official after their blowout loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday: Alex Wood will start in game 3 of the NLDS, which takes place tonight at 6:37 p.m. PT on TBS. Starting opposite him is one of the Dodgers superstar trade deadline acquisitions: Max Scherzer.
Wood has had very mixed results against the Dodgers this year in three starts. He’s pitched 17 innings and allowed 20 hits, 3 walks, and 9 earned runs, with 22 strikeouts. It’s a tremendous strikeout-to-walk ratio, but he’s been done in by allowing 5 home runs. His success tonight might be determined by his ability to limit the long ball.
Scherzer essentially hasn’t faced the Giants this season. He started against them while a member of the Washington Nationals, but faced just one batter before exiting the game with an injury. He’s yet to face them as a Dodger, but there’s good news for the Giants: he’s been struggling a bit lately. In his last three starts — his final regular season appearances against the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres, then the Wild Card Game against the St. Louis Cardinals — Scherzer has pitched 14.2 innings and allowed 20 hits, 4 walks, and 11 earned runs, with 14 strikeouts.
Don’t be surprised if the teams combine for three runs, or for 15.
