The Giants have inked their top high school selection in the 2025 MLB Draft.
The San Francisco Giants have signed ninth-round pick Reid Worley for a $747,500 signing bonus, according to a report by Jim Callis of MLB.com. A right-handed pitcher drafted out of a Georgia high school, Worley had been committed to play baseball at Kennesaw State. However, he will now forego collegiate baseball to pursue a pro career with the Giants organization.
Worley’s deal is significantly over slot for where he was selected ($204,400) and will require the Giants to spend slightly less than slot for the remainder of their selections. Worley is likely receiving a $750,000 total bonus, but teams are allowed to give players a $2,500 bonus after signing that does not count against the team’s bonus pool. Some teams are too cheap to use the additional flexibility, but the Giants have consistently taken advantage of this in recent years.
The Giants overall pool for the MLB Draft is $8,403,300 between all of their selections. However, teams are allowed to go over their pool allotment by less than 5% without facing more than menial financial consequences. So the Giants had just over $420,164 available to go above slot with their selections. Worley is receiving $543,100 over slit, creating the need to create about $123,000 in savings elsewhere. Given the number of college selections, including multiple seniors, that should not be a problem.
While Worley was not considered among the top tier of prep pitching prospects in his class, he has showcased some exceptional traits that are easy to dream on. According to Prep Baseball Report, Worley’s slider generated an elite 3200-3300 RPMs, making it among the best breaking balls in the class. His fastball has mostly worked in the low-90s, but scouts are optimistic that he can gain velocity if he fills out his 6’2’’ frame.
