Rumor: SF Giants Join Trade Market for Luis Castillo

The SF Giants have reportedly joined the mix suitors for a potential Luis Castillo trade.

The trade market for Seattle Mariners ace Luis Castillo continues to grow, as the San Francisco Giants are emerging as potential suitors, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Castillo has been a highly targeted starting pitcher on the trade market this offseason. In December he was also rumored to possibly land with the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs. But his market goes further beyond these teams, with the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles also in the mix. The Giants made a big splash earlier in the offseason, signing Willy Adames to a franchise-record deal. But we are still waiting for President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey to make more significant moves ahead of the 2025 season. The Giants are looking to add a quality starter to their rotation, and Castillo would make a suitable fit.

SF Giants Join the Mix for Potential Luis Castillo Trade

The Giants are looking to bolster their 2025 starting rotation, and adding the 32-year-old Dominican veteran would help solidify it. Castillo and innings eater/starting pitcher Logan Webb would spearhead a dynamite rotation for the Giants. Castillo is an ace who showcased his strongest attributes in the 2023 season with the Mariners. Some of his impressive numbers that year include a 27.3 % strikeout rate, a 3.34 ERA, and a .218 batting average against him, his lowest figure with Seattle and the fifth-lowest of his career. He also recorded his 1,000 strikeout against the Oakland Athletics while also pitching a perfect game into the seventh inning against the Colorado Rockies.

Castillo’s pitch repertoire consists of a four-seam, slider, sinker, and changeup. He uses the four-seamer the most at 45.3% of the time, according to Baseball Savant. In 2024, the fastball touched around 96 mph. Last season, Castillo sported an 11-12 record with a 3.64 ERA along with 175 strikeouts and a 1.169 WHIP. In December, MLB insider Jon Morosi characterized Castillo as “one of the very best arms in the American League.” But what would it take for the Giants to land Castillo? Moving any minor leaguers aside from the Giants’ top prospect Bryce Eldridge would make sense. In addition, the Mariners may consider a package offer involving such names as Tristan Beck, Casey Schmitt, Carson Whisenhunt, and Wade Meckler, all up-and-coming major leaguers.
