SF Giants All-Star Pitcher Could Begin Rehab Assignment as Soon as Next Week

June 27, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Alex Cobb hasn’t pitched a single inning this season after offseason surgery on his left hip. In Cobb’s latest injury update, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that he would throw a bullpen session on Friday. Cobb could begin a rehab assignment with Single-A San Jose if all goes well. Cobb has been trending in the right direction since being shut down in May, with soreness in his throwing shoulder. He must build back up to a starter’s workload after being on the injured list. He likely won’t return to the San Francisco Giants rotation until after the All-Star break.

Some pitcher injury updates: Alex Cobb will throw a bullpen on Friday and if all goes well will have a rehab assignment in San Jose after.

Kyle Harrison will also throw a bullpen on Friday.

Giants’ Alex Cobb: Rehab Assignment Looming

Cobb, who has been on the injured list since the end of the 2023 season, had his throwing program put on hold on May 20 due to right shoulder soreness. The right-hander progressed through rehab but missed more time to treat his throwing shoulder. Cobb dealt with a left hip impingement for much of the second half and was shut down. Despite the absence, the Giants did pick up Cobb’s $10 million club option for 2024. When healthy, the veteran was one of the team’s best starts over the last two seasons, earning his first career All-Star selection in 2023. He finished the season with a 3.87 ERA over 28 starts for San Francisco.

Aside from Cobb, the Giants starting pitcher Robbie Ray continued his rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento. The left-hander struck out two and allowed no runs on one hit and one walk over 2 1/3 innings in his rehab appearance Sunday. Ray was one of three rehabbing Giants pitchers to take the bump for Sacramento on Sunday, including Austin Warren and Blake Snell. Ray is gearing up for a starter role as he gears up a return from Tommy John surgery. He will likely be a rotation option in late July or early August.
