SF Giants Name Reliable Ace as Opening Day Starter

February 21, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

It comes as no surprise that the San Francisco Giants have named Logan Webb as their Opening Day starter for the fourth consecutive season. Last season for the Giants, Webb sported a 13-10 record with a 3.47 ERA with 172 strikeouts across 204.2 innings pitched. Webb has been the Giants’ durable starter and earned his first All-Star selection last season. He has been a reliable starter in the rotation who is known for eating up innings. Since 2023 he’s pitched over 200 innings and is looking to sustain that consistency. Webb was drafted by the Giants in 2014 in the fourth round and signed a five-year $90 million extension through 2028 on April 14th, 2023.

Unsurprising in any way but Melvin says Logan Webb is the Giants Opening Day starter.

Webb’s Durability Earns Him Spot As Opening Day Starter

Since 2022, Webb has been named as the Giants Opening Day starter. Webb has strong athleticism and showcased a solid fastball from a young age. When Webb was a senior in high school, his fastball reached the mid-90s. Webb will be entering his seventh season with a Giants organization whose below .500 2024 season is looking to be revamped. But keep in mind, the Giants took a hit to their starting rotation with Blake Snell signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But they did add a veteran arm with Justin Verlander. In addition to the franchise-record signing of Willy Adames.

But overall, the Giants’ offseason didn’t drastically enhance the roster. Rumors were speculated that the Giants were pursuing the trade market for Luis Castillo, but he remains with the Seattle Mariners. Luckily, they have Webb, who is known as the “ground ball machine.” According to Baseball Savant, last season, his ground ball ranked in the 95th percentile at a rate of 57.2 %. Webb’s ability to produce ground balls comes from his mixed usage of the sinker/changeup/slider. This mix of pitches successfully generates a lot of groundballs as he also gets ahead in the count. Last season, Webb also sported a solid chase rate of 33 %. This showcases his capability to be dominant on the mound against opponents.
