In a historic milestone, the Minasian family is set to make its mark on Major League Baseball. As reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the San Francisco Giants will name Zack Minasian their new general manager on Friday. This appointment will cement the Minasians as the first brotherly duo to concurrently hold general manager positions in MLB, with Zack joining his brother Perry at the helm of the Los Angeles Angels.
Zack Minasian Expected to Take GM Role
Minasian will replace Pete Putila and will work with the new president of baseball operations Buster Posey. In 2022, Minasian stepped into the role of vice president of pro scouting. He joined the Giants organization in 2019 after spending the previous 14 seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Minasian served in the position of special advisor- baseball operations. For six years, he served as the club’s director of professional scouting and managed minor-league scouting for the Brewers.
At 27, Minasian took over as the Brewers’ professional scouting director, becoming the youngest scouting director in baseball. While with the Brewers, Minasian assisted the club in three postseason appearances, most notably ending a 26-year drought in 2008 and a franchise-best 96 wins in 2011. Minasian was a part of acquiring players including CC Sabathia, Zack Greinke, Carlos Gomez, and Josh Hader among others.
Posey set out to find a general manager who possessed a deep understanding of scouting, and he achieved that goal. Consequently, Minasian brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the game, making him an ideal fit for this key leadership role. Furthermore, with his engaging public persona, he’ll inject fresh energy into the organization, resonating with colleagues and stakeholders alike.
This hiring marks a stark departure from Posey’s previous associations. It showcases a significant shift from the approach taken under Farhan Zaidi and Putila, signalling a new era for the Giants.
