Move over, Dodgers.
Hello and happy Sunday.
On Saturday, after fighting an uphill battle all year, the San Francisco Giants finally surpassed the Los Angeles Dodgers in postseason odds. According to Fangraphs, the Giants have a 99.6% chance of making the playoffs — tops in the National League, and just a hair above the Dodgers at 99.5%.
The Giants have led the NL West virtually the whole year, but LA’s roster has projected to be better, so they’ve still held the best odds. That’s still evident in NL West race, with the Dodgers having a tiny lead in odds of winning the division, 49.9% to 49.2% (though perhaps that has now changed — I wrote this before the Giants Saturday night game against the Colorado Rockies).
Fangraphs gives the Dodgers a roughly four-times better chance of winning the World Series than the Giants, which seems very odd given the variance of postseason play. But I’m not here to cry. I’m here to celebrate what most people would have thought was impossible in March: the Giants getting to the halfway mark of August with a better chance of making the postseason than the Dodgers.
Bring it home, dudes. You’re very close and we’re all craving Dodger tears.
