Thursday BP: Giants are the first team to 90 wins

MLB: San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

Just like everyone predicted before the season.

Good morning, baseball fans! And what a morning it is. The San Francisco Giants were the first team to 90 wins after sweeping the Colorado Rockies yesterday.

It’s still wild to me that team that had modest expectations starting the season is on pace to win more games than any of the teams that ended up winning the World Series. It feels like just a couple of years ago people were rooting for them to reach 100 losses and now they’re closing in on 100 wins.

I thought Brand Crawford summed it up quite nicely in this quote shared by Susan Slusser of The San Francisco Chronicle:

“Nobody outside our clubhouse expected this year for us, so it’s definitely a nice benchmark. But we still have 20-some games to go, so the next benchmark would be 100 and we’re going to keep pushing for that and trying to win every game.”

Buried in the abundance of Really Cool News from yesterday, I’d like to link to a piece from Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area highlighting LaMonte Wade, Jr.’s incredible run of late game, clutch hits.

I’d also like to point out that a few years ago, the Giants only had one player, Brandon Belt, with double digit home runs. This year, they have ten. And with Crawford’s home run in yesterday’s game, that puts him as the third player to hit 20, behind Mike Yastrzemski and Belt, and one shy of tying his career high.

There’s just an abundance of riches and good things going on with this team and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

What time do the Giants play today?

The Giants have an off day today before they take on the Chicago Cubs this weekend. In the meantime, you can watch the Los Angeles Dodgers play the St. Louis Cardinals at 10:15 a.m. PT.
