Tokyo 2020 Olympics | What’s Happened So Far?

July 28, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal

It has now been five days since the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony, but there has been lots of sporting action already. Friday, July 30 marks the official halfway point of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics – here’s how the Olympics looks heading into the second half of the Games.

It’s been an extremely exciting and entertaining Tokyo Olympics so far, which has been great for us sports fans! There’s still plenty more to come, with the closing ceremony not until Sunday, August 8.

Team USA Challenging for Top of the Medals Leaderboard

The USA are always in the run-in to top the medals leaderboard at the Olympics. Team USA are usually joined by China and Great Britain at the top, all of whom are challenging for the No.1 spot. However, this year, hosts Japan have become the frontrunner as immediate challengers, who are currently top of the leaderboard with 12 gold medals in the Games already.

At the time of writing, Team USA have been awarded 10 gold medals so far, and are third in the medals table. However, Team USA has collected the most overall medals, with a total of 30. Second is China with 26.

With Team GB not receiving the early gold medals available in the games, it is Russia and Australia that are closest behind Team USA, with 7 and 6 gold medals respectively. However, there’s still plenty of time for this to change numerous times – we’re not even halfway through the Games yet!
