We’re taking a break from our usual Giants coverage this morning to discuss the absolute best story in baseball this week.
Good morning, baseball fans!
This morning, I’m going to step away from San Francisco Giants coverage to share one of the most wholesome and entertaining stories I’ve seen all year.
If you are a fan or even casual viewer of “Last Week Tonight” hosted by John Oliver, you know that they love to really go for the joke in a physical, tangible way. So it should come as no surprise that they put out a call to Minor League teams around the country who might be in need of a mascot re-brand.
Dozens of teams submitted their pleas, but the team that made the cut was the Eerie Sea Wolves from Eerie, PA.
This week, the show made the big reveal of the new mascot, and it is absolutely as wonderful, horrifying, and hilarious as you would expect from a combination of a minor league mascot and John Oliver’s staff.
Meet the Moon Mammoths:
Eat your heart out, Gritty. And Dinger. And every other terrifying mascot in the world.
I want to direct you all to this great piece from Scott Chiusano of MLB.com who wrote about the backstory behind the decision. Oliver’s team dug deep into the lore of Eerie to come up with this one and knocked it out of the park.
The team is set to debut their new mascot and everything that goes with it on July 19th, with Oliver in attendance.
I am absolutely in love with every aspect of this story and I hope you enjoy it as well.
