Sure, we’re only a few weeks into the season. But the Giants are, thus far, a force to be reckoned with. What do Giants fans credit the early success of the team to?
Good morning, baseball fans!
As of the time this is being written on Monday, the San Francisco Giants are sitting at the top of a very competitive heap that is the National League West. If you had told me in February that this was where they would be even just a month into the season, I would have laughed at you.
Now I’m laughing at me.
I was on the phone with my brother the other day, and we were discussing the success the team has had thus far. I said, jokingly at first, that it’s clearly the Buster Posey effect.
I was mostly referencing the old Toyota commercial where Posey is cast as a catcher for a woman in labor, and her husband says something to the effect of “Don’t embarrass me in front of Buster Posey.”
Now, we could get into the tackiness of that commercial in general, but that’s not the point. The point is, it’s been kind of a running joke ever since that one should not embarrass themselves in front of Posey. This was still in effect back in the 2022 season, the year after Posey announced his retirement. The team had been sucking, as they were wont to do that year, but they got it together and won on the day that Posey was being honored.
Now, am I saying that that is officially why the team is doing well this season, now that Posey is running the whole show? Officially? No. But is that the reason I’m going with for today’s question? Absolutely.
