UEFA Champions League | Matchday 2 Round-Up

October 1, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal

Two of the six group stage games have now been played by each team, and there has already been plenty of exciting fixtures already in Europe’s prestigious competition. We’ve rounded up all of the latest Champions League action – this is how all the groups look after two matches!

Group A

On matchday two, Pep Guardiola was reunited with Lionel Messi as he started for PSG against Manchester City in Paris. It was Messi magic once again as he netted against his former manager, which was PSG’s second and they won 2-0 on the night.

In the other game of Group A on Tuesday, Club Brugge came away as surprise winners, beating RB Leipzig on the road 2-1. Despite going 1-0 up within the first five minutes through Christopher Nkunku, Brugge mounted a comeback in the first half and held on for their first win in Europe this season.

Group B

Also on Tuesday night, English side Liverpool came off the back of a 3-2 win over AC Milan in matchday 1, and traveled to Portugal to face FC Porto. The reds were rampant for the 90 minutes, dominating the home team and winning 5-1. Now, Liverpool are six points from six, while Porto still only have one.

Despite going 1-0 up against Atletico Madrid, Italian giants AC Milan were down to 10 men after Franck Kessie was sent off before the half-hour mark. Madrid capitalized on the man advantage late in the second half, with Antoine Griezmann equalizing, before a 97th-minute penalty converted by Luis Suarez was enough to secure the win.

Group C

There’s a clear separation in Group C of the four teams, with two on six points, and the other two on zero. On matchday two, Dutch giants Ajax beat Besiktas 2-0 at home, while Borussia Dortmund managed to score through Donyell Malen to take all three points from the game.

However, Ajax & Dortmund will face each other twice in a row next in the Champions League, giving one of the two others a big opportunity to close the gap in the group. Both Besiktas & Sporting will be looking for two wins – only time will tell who takes advantage.

Group D

If anyone would have said that Moldova’s FC Sheriff Tiraspol would be top of Group D after two games, we would have said they were completely wrong. Well, ‘the beautiful game’ has done it again, and now they have six out of six points so far in Europe. This also includes a 2-1 victory against giants Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan & Shakhtar Donetsk had a stalemate on Tuesday, drawing 0-0. So, as things stand, Sheriff are top, with Real Madrid in second. Inter Milan have the chance to pick themselves up with two games against the leading Moldovan side – don’t write either team off!

Group E

Have the Spanish giants fallen? It looks like that at the moment, with Barcelona failing to score in their two opening group stage games, and losing 3-0 to both Bayern Munich & Benfica. It’s been a tough time for Barca in Europe, and a major change could be needed for them to progress.

Meanwhile, the dominant German side Bayern Munich are going from strength to strength, and after beating Barcelona in their opening game, then dominated Dynamo Kyiv 5-0 on matchday 2. Without a goal conceded – are they the strongest team in the tournament?

Group F

Cristiano Ronaldo rescued Manchester United with a last-minute winner against Villarreal on Wednesday night, as United trailed 1-0 until Alex Telles equalized for the home team. In an early kick off, Atalanta were able to beat BSC Young Boys 1-0, putting them top of Group F.

As things stand, the Italian side are top on four points, with both Man United & Young Boys joint on three points, while Villarreal sit at bottom on just one point. It’s a tight group, with each team still in with a chance of progressing through to the knockout stages.

Group G

RB Salzburg are still undefeated in Group G After two games, including a 2-1 home win against Lille on matchday 2. A brace of penalties from Karim Adeyemi put Salzburg ahead, and despite Burak Yilmaz netting for the French side, it was only a consolation.

In the other game on matchday 2, Wolfsburg and Sevilla shared the points after a 1-1 draw. Renato Steffen put the German side ahead, but a red card for Wolfsburg – their second in two Champions League games – resulted in Ivan Rakitic converting a penalty to earn Sevilla a point.

Group H

Juventus are unbeaten in both of their opening Champions League, and beat English side Chelsea on matchday 2, thanks to a goal from Federico Chiesa at the beginning of the second half. Meanwhile, the Blues are still joint second after a win in their opening Champions League game.

Meanwhile, Zenit St. Petersburg ran riot in their game against Malmo, winning 4-0 on the night. They were two up before the away side went down to 10-men, and then proceeded to dominate the game.
