It’s sure starting to look like it.
Let’s make one thing clear: the San Francisco Giants are not going to sell at the trade deadline. Sure, maybe if they get swept today against the Pittsburgh Pirates, they’ll entertain the idea of unloading a nondescript piece or handing a role over to a youngster. But they’re not selling. Not an earnest sell job, at least.
But are they toast?
The team has been in a complete free fall, despite being mostly healthy. They’ve won just two of 11 games since the All-Star break, and been one of the worst teams in baseball for a few months. After Tuesday’s loss, they’re sitting at .500 for the first time since thesecond game of the season. It’s bad. It’s ugly. And it’s certainly not fun.
Despite all that, the Giants are just five games out of postseason positioning, and they have the talent to go on a run. Seen through that lens, it sure shouldn’t feel like the season is over.
And yet … it feels like the season is over. With the trade deadline looming — they need to win today, or else they’ll approach the deadline with a losing record — we’re about to see what the front office thinks about this team. It sure feels pretty clear from an outside perspective, though.
Stick a fork in them, folks.
