It’s a new month of Giants baseball, so it’s once again time to check in and see how Giants fans are feeling about the season so far.
Good morning, baseball fans!
Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants announced that they have picked up manager Bob Melvin’s club option for the 2026 season. It’s also a new month, which makes this a perfect time for a check-in with Giants fans.
I’ve been doing these every few weeks to see how people are feeling about the season so far, and Mays help me I’ll keep doing them until all hope is lost.
Personally, I have shifted from “cautiously optimistic” to “mildly alarmed” since our last check in. Nothing quite like getting swept by the Miami Marlins and then immediately losing a series to one of the worst teams in baseball (the Chicago White Sox) to make the red flags start pouring in to my anxiety-meter.
The team has lost four of its last five series (not including the current one). They’ve gone from being hot on the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers, to being hot on the heels of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the other direction.
It’s not what you want. And we can’t even chalk it up to a June Swoon because May wasn’t all that much better. I think we’re starting to see the wheels begin to loosen before they inevitably fly off and send the whole season careening off of a cliff.
Okay, maybe I’ve shifted a little farther in the other direction than is strictly fair. I’m biased at this point because I’m used to covering a team that is aggressively mediocre and doing a do-si-do with .500 until the bitter end.
So I’m probably a little bitter myself that they started so strong and yet they still seem to be on track to be back at that .500 line within a week.
