Now that’s a sentence you don’t write every day.
Good morning, baseball fans!
I’ve got a truly bizarre story for you today, involving former San Francisco Giants coach Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens.
Meulens, now the hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies, posted a (now deleted) video on Instagram of himself sitting in the captain’s seat of the cockpit on the Rockies’ plane while it was in flight. In a recovered clip of the video, it shows Meulens joking about landing the plane, as the first officer looks on from the next seat.
This is, uh, not allowed. Per a statement to SF Gate, United Airlines confirms that there is an ongoing investigation taking place by the Federal Aviation Administration, adding:
“As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we’ve reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation.”
I don’t really know what the consequences, if any, would be for Meulens in this situation. It seems more like a failure on the part of members of the flight crew. But still, an odd story. The phrase “FAA investigation involving Hensley Meulens” was definitely not on my 2024 bingo card.
What time do the Giants play this weekend?
The Giants wrap up the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend, with both games starting at 1:05 p.m. PT.
