Unlike the Philadelphia 76ers or Utah Jazz, the Sacramento Kings did not have a first-round pick going into the draft. Nevertheless, the Kings arguably walked away from the draft as its biggest winners. They were able to trade into the first round to get Colorado State wing Nique Clifford and draft Stanford center Maxime Raynaud in the second. Those two, alongside the rest of Sacramento’s Summer League team, succeeded in winning the entire event in Las Vegas.
Undoubtedly, the rookies demonstrated that both of them have the talent and experience to have an immediate effect on winning. Let’s dive into the three reasons why the Sacramento Kings won the 2025 NBA Draft.
3 Reasons Why The Sacramento Kings Won The 2025 NBA Draft
#1: Ready-Made Prospects
One of the big reasons why the Kings won the draft is their acquisition of prospects who can contribute immediately. Both Clifford and Raynaud are upperclassmen in this class, meaning they have more experience than their underclassmen peers. With that experience, they will certainly be more familiar with finding ways to be impactful without being the main option. Not only that, but their skills will definitely be far more polished than the average rookie. For a Kings team that is still looking to be a competitive force in the Western Conference, those two are the perfect picks in terms of NBA-readiness.
#2: Versatility Above All
Another reason why the Kings are the biggest winners in this year’s draft is the sheer versatility their draft picks can provide. Clifford, as a prospect, is billed as a Swiss-army knife wing who can do a wide range of things on the court at a high level. Not only is he athletic and has good size, but he is immensely skilled as well. Namely, Clifford has shown that he can play both on and off the ball. He can serve as a secondary creator while also having great off-ball abilities. Plus, Clifford is a good defender and great rebounder for his size. His versatility as a player allows the Kings to have someone who can slot into any lineup.
As for Raynaud, he has an incredibly unique skill set as a big man. Specifically, he is an offensively talented center who can both finish at the rim and space the floor. Additionally, Raynaud has flashed potential as a passer and is an effective scorer in the post. His offensive dynamism allows the Kings to deploy him in various offensive roles, making any lineup more offensively potent.
#3: Turning Nothing Into Gold
The most important reason why the Kings won the draft is due to the excellent moves they made, given their lack of assets this year. At the start of the draft, the Kings did not possess a first-round pick, as it was in the possession of the Hawks. Atlanta then traded that pick to the Pelicans. As for the second round, Sacramento only had a one pick there. Regardless of their lack of assets in the most recent draft, the Kings were able to find their way back into the first round and got themselves a steal in Clifford. Not only that, but they also got another steal in Raynaud. The fact that they made savvy moves to grab absolute gems arguably makes them the winners of the draft.
