Kings Core Veteran Green Lights Team’s Offseason Leadership Moves

August 13, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The regime change in Sacramento began in the early stages of last season when Mike Brown was dismissed as the Kings’ head coach. The move came with much criticism from the outside. Brown’s success leading the Kings was essential in turning around the franchise. Yet, an up-and-down start to last season was his eventual doom. His assistant, Doug Christie, was awarded the post in Brown’s stead. Christie went 27-24 for the remainder of the season, earning a permanent shot as the Kings’ head coach. Christie’s promotion wasn’t the only significant change Sacramento had amongst its leadership ranks, though. It is the leadership changes where Domantas Sabonis hails as the key to the Sacramento Kings’ offseason moves, and the triple-double machine is looking forward to seeing what the upcoming season has in store for his squad.

Domantas Sabonis offers praiseworthy reactions to the Sacramento Kings’ offseason moves; excited to played under HC Doug Christie next season

After the Kings punched their offseason ticket early after missing out on the playoffs, the front office underwent a personnel shift. Monte McNair was replaced by Scott Perry at the GM position shortly after the team’s play-in fallout. It was only a few years ago that McNair was named Executive of the Year. Brown was instrumental in that same year as well, but both men were eventually let go. Now, not only has the front office changed its leader with Perry entering the fold, but Christie is now in charge from the sidelines.

Kings veteran star Sabonis has nothing but good things to report on how he feels the organization’s direction is heading. Sabonis recently gave the thumbs up to the offseason changes. He also gave some insight on what it’s been like learning Christie’s system as the new NBA season approaches.

“Doug [Christie] is working hard on the new system, how he wants to play us, and he’s gonna translate it through the training camp. So far, all summer, we’ve been getting little bits and pieces of that new offense. So hopefully when training camp comes, you know, it’s smooth and we’re ready to go.” Sabonis also added that Perry’s presence has added a positive perspective on the Kings’ future, saying, “I think Scott’s [Perry] done a great job so far, and he’s trying to turn things around just like everyone else. I think we think alike, and we both want to get this thing running in the right direction, and his values are aligned.”

Where the Kings land in the West for the 2025-26 season

The Western Conference is shaping up to be just as bruising and battering as it was last season. Seeds one through ten to twelve could be potential playoff teams. The Kings are sure to be in the mix. That said, with the team returning virtually the same roster as last season, it’s hard to put the Kings near the top of the elite bunch. It may even be challenging to put them somewhere in the middle. Sacramento will have an extremely harsh path ahead regardless of their positioning.

Returning veterans DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine were speculated to be moved this offseason. Yet, as it stands today, both remain in Sacramento and should at least start the season with the Kings. Sabonis, however, is more focused on the trajectory of the team. As he mentioned, the future appears to align with what he sees, at least for now. What Kings fans can expect is another dominating season from the big man, where the triple-doubles should come in plenty. After all, that is Sabonis’s specialty.
