Kings Could Have Landed 14.9 PPG Bucket-Getter

December 31, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Nov 24, 2024; Sacramento, California, USA; Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox (5) passes against Brooklyn Nets forward Jalen Wilson (left) and guard Cam Thomas (24) during the fourth quarter at Golden 1 Center.

The Sacramento Kings have been active in exploring ways to improve their roster during their rocky start to the 2024-25 season. Before parting ways with head coach Mike Brown, the Kings reportedly inquired about trades for several NBA stars, including Brooklyn Nets swingman Cam Thomas.

Kings’ Struggles Led to Trade Talks

The Kings stumbled out of the gate, losing 13 of their last 20 games before December’s end. This skid dropped them to the 12th seed in the Western Conference, well below preseason expectations.

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reported that Sacramento’s front office sought solutions through trade inquiries. They targeted Chicago’s Zach LaVine, New Orleans’ Brandon Ingram, Washington’s Kyle Kuzma, and Brooklyn’s Cam Thomas. Smaller roster moves were also considered.

The Kings even consulted Mike Brown on potential roster or staff changes. However, these efforts weren’t enough to save Brown’s job. The team appointed Doug Christie as interim head coach.

Cam Thomas: A Scoring Machine

Nets guard Thomas has emerged as a prime trade asset in his fourth NBA season. Thomas, now in the final year of his rookie deal, has proven his scoring prowess.

This season, Thomas is averaging 24.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 17 games. His ability to generate offense makes him one of the league’s most sought-after scorers.

Thomas has also improved his advanced metrics, contributing to five more expected wins for the Nets. His presence boosts his team’s points per possession by 8.2, ranking in the 93rd percentile. For years, he faced criticism as an ’empty-calories’ scorer, but now his scoring contributes to winning basketball.

Why the Kings Need Cam Thomas

The Kings built a promising core of De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and DeMar DeRozan. However, their 14-19 record reflects their struggles to meet expectations.

Adding Thomas would give Sacramento an elite scoring option to complement their current stars. His offensive versatility and ability to create his own shot could help the Kings climb the standings. He could elevate their bench unit to become one of the best in the NBA; they are currently 28th in bench points.

Basketball revolves around scoring, and Thomas excels in putting the ball through the hoop. The Kings are currently eighth in the league in offensive rating, but one can’t have too much scoring, especially when facing teams in the stacked Western Conference.

Trade Challenges for Sacramento

Despite Thomas’ potential fit, acquiring him won’t be easy. His expiring $10 million contract and Brooklyn’s trade intentions make him a valuable commodity.

The Nets, reportedly willing to move Thomas, may seek a significant return. Sacramento would need to offer draft compensation while matching salaries.

The Road Ahead for Sacramento

Even after moving on from Brown, the Kings remain in a precarious position. Christie faces a daunting task as interim coach.

Sacramento must act quickly to salvage their season. Whether through acquiring Thomas or other moves, the Kings need changes to stay competitive in the West.

Adding Thomas would address their scoring woes and inject fresh energy into their roster. While no trade is guaranteed, pursuing a talent like Thomas aligns with Sacramento’s desire to contend.
