NBA In-Season Tournament: Best Bets to Advance from Group Stages

March 1, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

As the 2023-2024 NBA season unfolds, fans are in for an exciting new addition to the basketball landscape – the In-Season Tournament. This midseason showdown promises intense competition and thrilling matchups in an all-new format. The tournament features 3 groups from each conference and 5 teams within each group. The teams were separated by a calculation of regular season wins from last year followed by a random drawing of the teams. Let’s analyze the best bets for each group to advance to the knockout rounds.

NBA In-Season Tournament: Best Bets to Advance from Group Stages

NBA East Group A: Cleveland’s Challenge

East Group A hosts fierce competition, and the Cleveland Cavaliers stand out as the team to watch. The Philidelphia 76ers are considered favorites in East Group A.  However, recent turmoil inside their organization with the loss of James Harden has created some uncertainty for the Sixers. The Cavaliers with Group Winner Odds set at +170 are poised to make a strong run in the tournament. Despite their slow start to the season, the Cavs have a great chance to challenge the status quo. Keep an eye on the Cleveland Cavaliers, they might just steal the show.

East Group B: Milwaukee’s Ascent

In East Group B, the Milwaukee Bucks are the frontrunner with Group Winner Odds at -120. Their previous playoff experience paired with the solid core of players along with the addition of Damian Lillard make them an extremely compelling choice to advance, especially considering the weaker competition in this group. The Bucks aim high in the tournament, and their track record indicates they are well-equipped to do so. They are by far the best bet to advance from this group stage and make a statement in the later rounds.

East Group C: Celtic Dominance

With the best Group Winner Odds in the first round, the Celtics emerge as the best bet to move forward. Their competition in East Group C features a mix of talents consisting of the Raptors, Bulls, Nets, and Magic. None of these teams pose a real threat to the Celtics this year. With Group Winner Odds at -150, the Celtics are poised for a strong run in the tournament. Their consistent performance coupled with key acquisitions, solidify their position as the team to beat in the group. Expect Celtic dominance and an impressive showing in the tournament.

NBA West Group A: Suns’ Gravity

In West Group A, the Phoenix Suns lead the pack with the highest expected season win total, making them extremely formidable opponents. However, Group Winner Odds suggest the Lakers are the top contenders listed at +150.  The Lakers’ pursuit of success is no secret and their experience in high-stakes situations could give them an edge. The Suns on the other hand have yet to see their stars play together, and this uncertainty could impact their chances. Keep an eye on the Lakers as they have a chance to challenge the Suns. However, the Suns have the talent and potential to overcome any questions which is why they remain my pick at +210 to come out of West Group A.

West Group B: Denver’s Mile High Ambitions

West Group B features a highly competitive group of teams containing the Nuggets, Clippers, Mavericks, Pelicans, and Rockets. The defending champs are the team to watch with +170 odds. Their impressive performance in the previous season indicates that they have what it takes to climb the ranks. Despite being in one of the two most competitive groups, if they can remain the team to beat the Nuggets can easily stay on course and move on to the next round.

West Group C: Warriors Pursuit

In the final group, the Warriors are well-positioned to lead. While the Sacramento Kings are extremely intriguing contenders with +220 odds, the Warriors remain the best bet in West Group C. The Warriors have a storied history of success and a roster filled with high IQ-level talent. Their pursuit of mid-season glory is a storyline to follow closely and will likely come down to the play of Stephen Curry. If he can rise to the challenge, so will the Warriors.

Wild Card Teams

The Lakers and Sixers have the best chance to claim the Wild Card spots in each of their respective conferences. Wild Card teams are the teams in each conference with the best record in Group Play that finished second in their group. Both of these teams could win their group stages outright. This makes them particularly strong bets for advancing from the first round. The Lakers and Sixers currently have the top odds within each of their groups, so for them to miss out on advancing altogether would be fairly surprising. Many of the other groups are stacked with far too much talent to comfortably pick a wild-card team.
