Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Wednesday, July 9th.
In today’s Dub Hub:
- Draymond Green writes post criticizing the new CBA for “putting an end” to free agency.
- In an article on the Players’ Tribune, Kevon Looney expresses his gratitude towards the Warriors and the entire Bay Area fan base.
- Clippers complete three-team trade that sends power forward John Collins from Utah to Los Angeles.
NBA free agency is well underway, yet the Golden State Warriors have yet to make a move. Draymond Green took that as an opportunity to shift the spotlight—not on roster decisions, but on what he sees as a much bigger issue: the state of free agency under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
“One can only point to the ‘New CBA’ and the 2nd apron(hard cap) for absolutely putting an end to Free Agency as we once knew it,” Green wrote in a post shared by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson.

Green didn’t dive into specifics—hinting that he may save the deeper breakdown for an episode of his podcast—but he made it clear the introduction of the second apron has drastically shifted the market as the added restrictions on high-spending teams, he believes, are limiting opportunities for many players.
He also used the moment to stress the importance of player awareness when it comes to league rules and business operations.
“Sadly, I sit here and watch so many players overplay the market and not understand what they are up against with the new rules,” Green said. “Which leads me to trying to understand the unstaggering percentage of guys that has no idea of THE BUSINESS they are a part of.”
Green’s post sparked responses from around the NBA world, including ESPN salary cap expert Bobby Marks, who offered his own take on the new CBA’s impact.
I respect @Money23Green but disagree that the apron rules has ended free agency.
Why free agency has shrunk is because nearly 50 potential free agents this summer decided that guaranteed money was too valuable and signed extensions.

Despite his criticism, Green made it a point to express his gratitude toward the league for everything it’s done for him and his peers. Still, his message was clear: the business side of the NBA is changing, and players need to understand the game off the court just as well as they do on it.

Warriors News:
Warriors’ Draymond Green slams NBA free agency, CBA rules in social media rant | NBC Sports Bay Area
“I have what I think is an extremely unique perspective on this,” Green wrote. “I am obviously a player, a former amazing general manager is one of my close friends. I am very close with previous owners and current ones. I was introduced to the business at 16 by Joe [Dumars], so yeah all that to say, it’s interesting to watch and also be a part of. Maybe I’ll write some long piece, or maybe I’ll just do a podcast lol.
“But regardless of where I decide to let these thoughts out, I should’ve been the Players association president lol. I could’ve helped a lot.”
Bradley Beal buyout with Suns is looming: What I’m hearing about the guard’s future | The Athletic
Beal, who turned 32 last month, averaged 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists on 50/39/80 shooting splits last season. It may not be so easy for him to find $13.8 million on the open market.
One week removed from the start of NBA free agency, most of the league is without cap space or the necessary exceptions it would take to give Beal that much money on a two-year contract. Various organizations Beal could consider can’t give him that much, either. According to a league source, the list of teams Beal has thought about includes the LA Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks.
Thank You, Bay Areaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa | The Players’ Tribune
I’d heard MVP chants from crowds a ton over the years. For Steph, or Klay, or KD, for a lot of different players. I’ve always had real MVP-type guys on my team. So I knew what I was hearing immediately. But I didn’t understand why the crowd was yelling it.
In my head I’m like: Is Steph about to check into the game? What’s going on?
I definitely didn’t think it was for me. Like, seriously, that’s the kind of thing I dreamed of as a kid. It couldn’t be for me. But….
It was!
The 25 Best NBA Free Agents Still Available, Plus Top Landing Spots | Bleacher Report
The Golden State Warriors made Melton their top free-agent acquisition last summer, but he was felled with a serious knee injury. The team dumped him to the Brooklyn Nets, since he was out for the year.
The most significant question about the 27-year-old is his health. Is he past the injury and capable of resuming at the same level as a sharp defensive guard who isn’t a liability on offense?
Prediction: One of several who could be a target for the Warriors. Some of the buzz linking him to the Los Angeles Lakers has died down in recent weeks.

Powell to Heat, Collins to Clippers in three-team trade | ESPN
Lawrence Frank, Clippers president of basketball operations, said the team had been targeting Collins “for the past couple of years.”
“He’s in his prime,” Frank said in a call with reporters on Monday. “He’s a power forward who can also play some small-ball 5. He’s someone who brings great athleticism, has shown the ability to score at all three levels. He’s tremendous runner, roller, vertical threat. I think James [Harden] will be able to unlock certain parts of his game that can unlock our team. He also can help space the floor, shot 40% from 3 this past year, will also help with our rebounding.”
NBA saw its first 7-team trade this summer. Here’s how — and why — it unfolded | The Athletic
Let’s start with the basics that help explain why: Sometimes it’s a lot more advantageous for a team to construct a multi-team trade rather than doing the same deals sequentially. This is because the trade exception available in what the collective bargaining agreement terms a “simultaneous trade” is larger than the one available if deals are done sequentially, even if the second trade happens mere minutes after the first.

Social media evidence suggests guard could seek Warriors return
Jake Fischer and Marc Stein reported that the Warriors are a “strong contender” to sign guard De’Anthony Melton, the veteran guard who tore his ACL after just six games with the Dubs last season. But there’s much stronger evidence than the reports from two well-connected NBA insiders.
