Dub Hub: How will the Warriors handle Jonathan Kuminga’s free agency?

Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Friday, June 27th.

In today’s Dub Hub:

  • Mike Dunleavy Jr. discusses Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency during his post draft press conference.
  • ESPN gives the Warriors a “B” for their 2025 NBA Draft Grades.
  • Masai Ujiri out as President and Vice Chairman of the Raptors, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

With the NBA Draft in the rearview mirror, the Golden State Warriors now shift their focus to the start of free agency on Monday, June 30. The most pressing storyline is the restricted free agency of forward Jonathan Kuminga, who—according to a recent article by The Athletic’s Anthony Slater—has made his priorities clear: he wants a bigger role, a real shot at stardom, and the opportunity to prove he can become a multi-time All-Star.

Via the Athletic:

“That’s what’s been on my mind,” Kuminga told The Athletic. “Things take time, but I feel like I’m at the point where that has to be my priority, to just be one of the guys a team relies on. Aiming to be an All-Star. Multiple times. Aiming to be great. … Wherever I’m going to be at, it don’t matter if it’s the Warriors or if it’s anywhere else, it’s something I want. I want to see what I could do. I know I got it. So I want to really see. I’ve never got that chance.”

Shortly after that story published, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Miami Heat are “potential suitors” for Kuminga—adding another layer to an already complicated situation.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. also addressed Kuminga’s desire to be with the team during his post-draft press conference, acknowledging that the situation could take time to play out.

Mike Dunleavy on Jonathan Kuminga’s desire (or non-desire) to be with Warriors factoring into restricted free agency: “I think from his end, ultimately he’s the one that has to sign the contract. If it happens with us, it’s reflective of his desire to be here.” pic.twitter.com/L3sXLCdvlo

As a restricted free agent, Golden State retains the right to match any offer sheet Kuminga receives, with one potential scenario involving re-signing him this summer and reassessing trade options closer to the deadline when the base year compensation restriction no longer applies. However, that would risk entering the season with the Kuminga situation unresolved as opposed to a fresh start that would seemingly benefit all sides involved.

Given his age (22), athletic tools, and flashes of two-way potential, Kuminga remains one of the Warriors’ most intriguing assets. But it remains to be seen if his personal goals can align with Golden State’s current priorities of winning with the core of Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.

Mike Dunleavy Recaps Golden State Warriors 2025 Draft

Golden State Warriors: B

Round 2: Alex Toohey (No. 52), Will Richard (No. 56)

Toohey’s shooting is still a work in progress after he hit 31% in the Australian NBL last season, but his defensive activity stood out in steal and block rates. I’ve long liked Richard, who ranked in the top 30 of my projections because of his high 2-point percentage.

It’s a different day, and the Warriors know it.

“I think our roster will be good,” Dunleavy said, with confidence, Thursday night. “Deep.”

To achieve that, you’re going to need coveralls, boots, gloves and hard hats. Time to grind.

To that end, league sources say the Kings are among the teams that have interest in Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga and will be monitoring his market when his restricted free agency begins. And while it appears unlikely that Kuminga will ultimately come their way, it speaks to the vision, and the range of possibilities here, that they’re even focusing on players of that ilk.

Cooper Flagg: ‘Blessing’ not having to be Mavericks’ centerpiece | ESPN

“A lot of people in this position or this situation aren’t granted this opportunity, so I just feel really blessed and grateful for the situation I’ve been given,” Flagg said Friday during his introductory press conference at the Mavericks’ practice facility. “I’m just looking forward to being a sponge. Just getting down here, I’m excited to just learn, soak it all in and learn from the guys that are older and have been through it all before.

“Those guys have so much knowledge. They’ve been through so much, and they have so much experience that it’s just going to be an incredible opportunity for me to learn and grow under them.”

Ace Bailey plans to report to Jazz on Saturday, team says | ESPN

“We’ve had good communication with Ace Bailey and his representatives,” the Jazz representative told ESPN on Friday. “We feel good about everything. Ace and his family are coming to Utah tomorrow. We’ll have a press conference Sunday and a practice Monday.

“This has always been the plan, including for our other rookies, Walter Clayton and John Tonje — to let them go home and collect their belongings, and then fly right to summer league from Salt Lake City.”

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Warriors draft national championship star at No. 56

The Justinian Jessup era is official over in Golden State. The Warriors traded the rights to Jessup, their No. 51 pick from the 2020 draft, to the Memphis Grizzlies to move up from No. 59 to No. 56 and select March Madness hero Will Richard.

Richard had 18 points, eight rebounds, and made four three-pointers in Florida’s 65-63 win over Houston. He made a crucial steal with 26 seconds left to seal the game.

Tweet to end the week:
