Rounding up all Warriors and NBA related news for Friday, May 16th.

In today’s Dub Hub:

  • Warriors will be “incredibly aggressive” retooling the roster this offseason, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
  • Draymond Green details the Warriors’ outlook at the center position heading into next season.
  • Nuggets force Game 7 after beating the Thunder in Game 6, 119-107.

The Golden State Warriors held exit interviews on Thursday as they officially wrapped up the 2024–25 NBA season. With the focus now shifting to the offseason, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors plan to be “incredibly aggressive” in reshaping the roster around their veteran core of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.

According to the report, Golden State is targeting a “playmaking wing defender or a center” as they look to address key positional needs heading into next season.

Curry, speaking during his own exit interview, didn’t offer specifics on what changes might come, but made it clear he trusts the front office to make the necessary moves.

Reporter: What do you think this roster needs?

One name to watch this summer is Jonathan Kuminga. The 22-year-old forward enters restricted free agency after averaging 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds on 45.4% shooting this past season. While Kuminga has shown flashes of star potential, questions remain about his long-term fit in head coach Steve Kerr’s system. This has led to speculation that he could be involved in a sign-and-trade deal should the right opportunity arise.

With multiple first-round picks, pick swaps, and a number of tradeable contracts at their disposal, the Warriors have the flexibility to reshape their roster. What they do next will go a long way in determining how much longer their championship window stays open in the twilight of the Curry era.

Warriors News:

Curry: Wants ‘ride to last as long as possible’ with Warriors | ESPN

“Our contracts — me, Draymond, Steve, Jimmy — are all two years [more],” Curry said. “And we want this ride to last as long as possible. But it’s just about what does this team need for next year, answering those questions over the summer, everybody preparing themselves individually to get through another 82-game season hopefully with a little bit more of a comfort room down the stretch where we don’t have to have a two-month gauntlet just to make the playoffs.

“I’m excited about it because there’s clarity [to the top of the roster], although there are a lot of decisions that need to be made over the summer.”

Draymond Green discusses the Warriors’ outlook at the center position

“I am the center of the future. Nah, I’m just playin’ with you.”

Report: Kuminga, Warriors will explore sign-and-trade scenarios | NBC Sports Bay Area

Kuminga, who reportedly is expected to have his $7.9 million qualifying offer extended by the Warriors this offseason, making him a restricted free agent in July, will explore sign-and-trade scenarios with Golden State, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson reported Thursday, citing league sources.

“Both sides are expected to explore sign-and-trade scenarios, those sources said, which would open up the market and theoretically give Kuminga the contract and fresh start he’d desire while bringing the Warriors back rotation players of immediate value,” Slater and Thompson wrote. “The Warriors’ decision-makers believe they need more positional size across the board — center and otherwise.”

Gary Payton II, Kevon Looney desire Warriors return but understand NBA business | NBC Sports Bay Area

The 32-year-old guard has expressed a desire to remain with Golden State, but after earning nearly $18 million over the last two seasons, he likely will have to take a pay cut or move on.

“Hopefully I can run off a couple more years in the league,” Payton said Wednesday. “It would be great to do it here. I love this organization. I love playing for Steve (Kerr). Love the guys they bring in to try to help win.

“They know how I feel. We’ll take it one day at a time.”

Jimmy Butler outlines his main goal for this offseason

Reporter: What do you think you’ll work on this off-season?

Jimmy Butler: “More than anything my main goal is getting to know my people. I mean it. If I can show them that I can be there for you outside of basketball.. It makes a huge difference on the court. It’s not just… pic.twitter.com/oui9P4aubN

NBA News:

Thunder-Nuggets: 5 takeaways as Denver forces Game 7 | NBA

Well, with players wearing down and the series stretching longer, Adelman had little choice but to find someone — anyone — from his bench who could contribute. Strawther didn’t disappoint.

Given the situation, this was perhaps the best game of the second-year swingman’s career: 15 points, all in the second half, which allowed the Nuggets to ease the burden on Jokić. His 3-pointers were especially game-saving as he shot 3-for-4 from deep.

What I’m hearing about the NBA Draft Combine: Will the Spurs trade or keep No. 2 pick? | The Athletic

And if you run Giannis/Wemby ball screens (with either capable of handling the ball) with Wembanyama pulling up or popping or Giannis driving or rolling, you’d be stressing the defense immensely, because most bigs can’t guard in space like that, especially against two aliens possessing among the most rare measurements and tools the NBA has seen.

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Can the Warriors make a legitimate play for Giannis?

The Warriors have a big brand market and a superstar with a longstanding connection to Antetokounmpo. It stands to reason that should be enough to at least get Golden State on a shortlist for the Bucks to consider their offers.

If the Warriors get to that point, they can offer Milwaukee immediate veteran stability to potentially remain a playoff team (Butler & Green), young prospects who already contribute with the upside to develop into foundational franchise pieces (Kuminga & Podziemski), and a trio of first-round picks to continue adding young talent in the future.
