Jonathan Kuminga Signs Short-Term Extension With Warriors

October 3, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors finally found common ground with Jonathan Kuminga. The restricted free agent forward signed a two-year, $48.5 million extension with a team option for the 2026-27 season. The agreement resolves a tense negotiation that stretched across the offseason.

Kuminga will waive his no-trade clause as part of the contract. In exchange, he knows he becomes a prime trade candidate once he is eligible to be dealt on January 15. The move secures him for now while leaving the Warriors flexibility for later.

Summer Impasse

Talks between the Warriors and Kuminga’s camp dragged for months. The franchise wanted a team option, while Kuminga pushed for a player option. His side insisted on it, or else he would have taken the qualifying offer. That standoff defined the summer.

Jonathan Kuminga’s extension ends what was a frustrating staredown. Kuminga and his agent, Aaron Turner of Verus Management Team, made it clear they valued leverage. The Warriors, on the other hand, were not willing to risk losing a young forward they drafted seventh overall in 2021.

Breakthrough on the Court

Last season, Kuminga did not always play. His role shrank at times, even as the Warriors advanced. But an untimely hamstring injury to Stephen Curry changed everything.

Without Curry, Kuminga became the featured scorer in the Western Conference Semifinals. He averaged 24.3 points and 3.5 rebounds per game over four contests, shooting 55.4 percent from the floor. His breakout stretch silenced doubts about his offensive ceiling.

Despite that surge, whispers of change followed. Sources suggested Kuminga wanted a fresh start elsewhere. Entering restricted free agency, the Warriors prepared for sign-and-trade scenarios. Sacramento and Phoenix explored possibilities, but Golden State found the offers lacking. The return simply was not enough.

Financial Balance

The Warriors’ cap sheet forced difficult decisions. Deals for Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II stalled until Kuminga’s future was resolved. Payton signed for the minimum, but Horford and Melton waited to finalize contracts until Kuminga agreed.

Jonathan Kuminga’s extension finally gives clarity. It allowes the Warriors to move forward with their roster construction while avoiding the risk of losing a key piece for nothing.

The Bigger Picture

This deal is not just about the next season. It’s about positioning the Warriors for flexibility. Kuminga remains a candidate to be moved if the right trade arises, but he also gives Golden State a scorer who can carry stretches without their oldest veterans.

The team believes it can still contend for a title, and Kuminga fits into that vision. For now, the Warriors ended a contract feud, kept their asset, and gained time.

Jonathan Kuminga’s extension may not answer every long-term question, but it prevents disaster in the short term.
