Kevin Durant received a ton of criticism during the summer of 2016 because he left the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors.
During a one-on-one interview with Draymond Green this week, Durant explained why he signed with the Warriors. The reason Durant left the Thunder is because he felt his game reached a point where he needed to see what he can do as a two-way star.
The two-time Finals MVP also made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t regret leaving the Thunder for the Warriors.
“I felt like I was the absolute perfect fit for what you guys were doing on both sides of the ball. And I knew my game reached the point where I needed to see what that looked like,” Durant told Green. “I thought that was a no-brainer. I would do that s**t a million times, and I didn’t second-guess at all. I knew that’s what I wanted to do when I was going into those meetings.”
Durant was outstanding during his three-year run with the Warriors, averaging 25.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
If Durant didn’t get hurt in the 2019 Finals, Golden State may have won three consecutive titles. That was something Green and Durant addressed during their interview for Bleacher Report’s Chips.
While there were plenty of great moments from Durant’s time in Golden State, he eventually felt like that experiment ran its course. As a result, he signed with the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.
Durant can really help out his legacy by winning a title in Brooklyn. Even if he doesn’t though, he’ll still go down as one of the best scorers in NBA history.
