Kuminga and Moody vs Murphy III and Lewis Jr.
The Golden State Warriors have won two out of three games at Las Vegas Summer League and are looking to make that three outta four when they take on the New Orleans Pelicans this evening.
Who: Warriors vs New Orleans Pelicans
When: Sunday, August 15th @ 6PM PT
How2Watch: ESPN2
Summer League is winding down, with championship seeding on the line. Per NBA.com:
Following Summer League preliminary play, the two teams with the best records from the first four games will meet in the Championship Game on Tuesday, Aug. 17 at (6 p.m., ESPN). Subsequently, the 28 teams that do not play in the Championship Game will play a fifth game on either Aug. 16 or Aug. 17.
I wonder where they store Summer League championship banners? Anyways at the time of this writing, here are the top teams by record:
- Boston Celtics 4-0
- Minnesota Timberwolves 3-0
- New Orleans Pelicans 3-0
- Sacramento Kings 3-0
- Utah Jazz 3-0
- Toronto Raptors 3-1
- Golden State Warriors 2-1 (tied with three others)
Look at these young Dubs showing a winning mentality out there in Vegas! In order to keep it up, they’ll have to knock off those undefeated Pelicans. They are led by second year guard Kira Lewis Jr. and 6-foot-9 rookie wing Trey Murphy III. Lewis Jr.’s 22 points led them to victory last game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Murphy played so well in that game that our blog buddy The Bird Writes is hyped:
It must be mentioned that Murphy spoiled us with yet another potential facet to his game. We’ve seen the superior defense, excellent effort levels and solid rebounding throughout, the outside shooting in game 1, several floaters in game 2, but tonight the passing ability stood front and center.
Murphy finished a game-high seven assists. My favorite was his fourth dime, a beauty off a drive and kick to Naji that resulted in a catch-and-shoot three. Yes, it’s summer league, but Murphy’s bag looks to be larger than anyone expected — he looks capable of being a lot more than just a 3-and-D wing in this league one day … maybe one day soon.
Well well well, looks like this Murphy guy may really have a bright future ahead of him in New Orleans. Which makes him the perfect opponent for Golden State’s highly touted youth movement to get some practice on. Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are a new age tag team that is taking over the summer exhibitions; it’ll be fun to see how they compete against Murphy’s red-hot Pelicans.

I also can’t wait to see Lewis Jr. battle with Gary Payton II.
