Steph Curry Gets Honest About Retirement Ahead Of Christmas Day Game

July 25, 2025 by The Spun

How Steph Curry Met Ayesha… (1:01)

At 36 years old, Steph Curry is on the back nine of a legendary playing career.

In his 16th season, Curry is averaging 21.8 points per game, which is his lowest output in a full season since 2011-12, but still impressive overall. The 10-time All-Star is still shooting 40.3% from three-point range and 92.1% from the free throw line while averaging 6.6 assists per game, his best showing since 2016-17.

Curry can still play at a high level–just ask the French national team–but he admitted in an interview with ESPN’s Malika Andrews before tomorrow’s Christmas Day game that he’s thought about the end of the road increasingly of late.

“Your dad played 16 seasons. You’re 16 seasons. How much thought do you put into how much longer you wanna play?” Andrews asked.

“More than I probably have before,” Curry said. “It’s okay to accept and acknowledge that the end is near at whatever point, but only because it allows you to enjoy what’s happening right now. But I think the more you talk about it, the more you acknowledge it, it levels up the sense of urgency of the moment now.”

Curry and the Golden State Warriors enter tomorrow’s game with a 15-13 overall record, good for eighth place in the uber-competitive Western Conference.

Assuming Curry’s sense of urgency means he wants one last shot at a championship, that could make for an interesting few months. Would the four-time NBA champion actually look to leave Golden State if he thought it would bring him closer to a title? Or does Curry try to pressure the Warriors’ front office to make a big move or two to make one last Finals push?

That’s to be determined over the next several weeks. In the meantime, the Warriors and Lakers will face of at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow night.

ABC will broadcast the action.
