Chris Paul’s tenure with the Golden State Warriors has officially come to a close.
Golden State waived Paul at the start of NBA free agency on Sunday, preventing his $30 million guaranteed salary from kicking in, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
The 39-year-old Paul spent one year with the Dubs after being acquired in last summer’s Jordan Poole trade. Golden State attempted to combine his contract in a trade, but was unable to find a take, which led to them releasing Paul today.
A 12-time All-Star, Paul appeared in 58 games for the Warriors and posted a career-worst 9.2 points per game, along with 6.8 assists. He primarily played a bench role for the first time in his career, making just 18 starts.
Paul is the third-oldest player in the NBA, trailing only LeBron James and P.J. Tucker. Assuming he signs somewhere and plays in 2024-25, he’ll become the 11th player in league history to log 20 seasons.
Paul is still searching for an elusive championship ring, meaning he’ll likely look to sign with a contender and chase a title next season.
The Warriors, meanwhile, are preparing for even bigger changes, as the organization is reportedly ready to lose star guard Klay Thompson in free agency.
