Warriors’ Next-Gen Stars Step Up as Curry Sits Out

November 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

With Stephen Curry sidelined against the Kings and Nuggets, the Warriors’ young players seized the moment, showcasing the promise of the next generation. In his absence, Golden State was forced to rely on its rising talent. Despite the two losses, there was finally this new youthful energy on the floor that the Dubs have been missing, full of growth and confidence.

From surprising breakout performances to vital clutch plays, the youth players made a clear statement that they’re ready to be called upon when it matters most.

Warriors Young Players Shine in Curry’s Absence

Curry Sidelined, Youth Take the Spotlight

Curry’s illness kept him out of the two road games against the Kings and Nuggets, and while his absence significantly impacted the team’s leadership and scoring, Dub Nation saw some promising signs for the Warriors’ future.
The Warriors have historically struggled when their franchise hero has been sidelined. During the injury-plagued 2019-20 season, they recorded just 15 wins in 65 games, highlighting the vital role Curry plays in the Warriors’ offensive system. This time, even though the Dubs struggled, the NBA world caught a glimpse of what the future could look like.
With Draymond Green out due to a rib contusion and Jimmy Butler sidelined with a back injury, the Kings’ matchup shifted the focus away from the veterans and onto the next generation of players. It was a rare chance for the young core to shoulder the responsibility, but seeing the youth take command was a refreshing change of pace.

Standout Performances

After signing with the Warriors late in the offseason, Will Richard made his first career start against the Kings, and he definitely made it count. The rookie guard exploded for a 30-point career high performance in Sacramento, showcasing his confidence under pressure and an impressive 63% three-point efficiency. Despite not having the same offensive spark against the Nuggets, Richard’s aggressiveness and scoring instincts were exactly what the Dubs needed in Curry’s absence.

23-year-old Warriors Guard Moses Moody struggled against the Nuggets, finishing with just two points on 11% shooting, but the night before, he reminded everyone of his potential. In the matchup against Sacramento, Moody erupted for a season-high 28 points, shooting 60% from the field alongside his fellow young teammates. Games like this prove that Moody has the ability to be a reliable option, but he tends to find his rhythm only when surrounded by a less experienced lineup.
Brandin Podziemski was another name who showcased why he could be a vital part of the Warriors’ future. The versatile guard delivered a near triple-double display, posting 14 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Having made just six starts this season, Podziemski proved with this performance that he deserves more opportunities in the starting lineup alongside the veterans.

What Does it Mean for the Future?

There’s no doubt that the Warriors will need to continue relying on their star veterans. If their All-Star-filled roster had been available against the Kings and Nuggets, it would’ve highly likely resulted in wins for the Dubs. But these past games have shown that the young core just need minutes and a real chance to prove they can hold their own.
Seeing the rise of Richard was a bright spot. While he may not get many starts as the season rolls on, his breakout performance showed head coach Steve Kerr that he deserves consideration for future starts. Similar opportunities to those given to Jonathon Kuminga, Moody, and Podziemski.
Yes, the franchise struggles massively without Curry, but there has to come a time when the Warriors start considering life after the dynasty. Curry won’t be hitting those impossible shots forever, Green won’t be holding it down on defense much longer, and at 36, Butler’s injuries are starting to catch up to him.
It seems like the foundation for the Warriors’ next era is already in place. All it needs is trust, time, and patience for the results to finally show.
