Will the Warriors move into the 1st round?

Probably not. But maybe?

Shockingly, the 2025 NBA Draft is already upon us. The champagne isn’t yet dry from the Oklahoma City Thunder’s championship win over the Indiana Pacers, yet here we are, building an NBA season anew.

The Dallas Mavericks will be rewarded for their ineptitude by being gifted Cooper Flagg. Fanbases will hope they’ve revamped their future with VJ Edgecombe, Kon Knueppel, Dylan Harper, and others. Players will see a lifetime of hard work materialize in their dream coming true. And the Golden State Warriors … well, they probably won’t do anything.

The NBA has taken a page out of the NFL’s playbook and made the draft a multi-day event. The first round gets underway tonight at 5:00 p.m. PT, but we have to wait until Thursday for the second round. And the Warriors have no first-round pick, having sent theirs to the Miami Heat in the Jimmy Butler III trade.

So will they make a splash and trade into the first round? It’s the second year running that the Dubs have been without a first-rounder, as they haven’t selected in the opening round since taking Brandin Podziemski in 2023, a decision that worked out very well.

It seems unlikely that the Warriors will trade into the first round. There haven’t been a lot of rumors pointing in that direction, but the team, with all it’s financial commitments, doesn’t have a lot of tools for adding talent, and the draft is a surefire way to do so. And given the trades of the last few days, which have seen notable players like Kevin Durant, Desmond Bane, Kristaps Porziņģis, Jrue Holiday, Anfernee Simons, CJ McCollum, and former Warrior Jordan Poole find new homes, nothing would be shocking to see today.

Don’t expect the unexpected. But if Joe Lacob has shown us one thing during his 15 years owning the Warriors, it’s that he’ll always be checking to see if a home run swing can be made. You can be sure Mike Dunleavy Jr.’s phone will be active all afternoon and all evening, even if the end result is probably us waiting until tomorrow to see the Dubs add a new player.
