A result that will warm Bears’ hearts.

Cal women’s soccer had reason to celebrate over the weekend, after they notched a major 1-0 road win over Stanford on Saturday.

Sophomore forward Mia Fontana scored the all-important goal for the Bears, set up by Emma Westin, and the defensive effort managed to make that stand as the only goal needed in the game.

Fontana’s goal was a mix of skill and luck, but she managed to get it in the net.

Cal goalkeeper Angelina Anderson made nine saves, one off her career high for the Bears.

Not only did this win come against the defending national champion, not only was it against a local rival, but this was Cal’s first win over Stanford since Nov. 2013, so this is a win that’s being savored in Berkeley.

The win brings Cal up to 5th place in the Pac-12, with a 2-2 conference mark, 4-2 overall so far on the season. They’re next scheduled to be in action Friday at home against Oregon, who are not far behind them in the standings.

Meanwhile, it’s been good times for Cal men’s soccer, too, as they beat UCLA 2-0 on Saturday. Evan Davila and Jonathan Estrada had the goals for the Bears in the all-UC matchup.

From there, much like their counterparts on the women’s team, the Bears withstood a furious rally attempt from UCLA, which ultimately came up short.

It’s the second win on the trot for Cal, as they beat San Diego State 3-2 the week before in San Diego. The results put Cal in 4th place in the Pac-12, but they next have a big game against Stanford Wednesday at Stanford, and we’ll see if they can replicate the result the Cal women got against the Cardinal.
