Joel Brown, the 6-foot-1 point guard from Brewster (N.H.) Academy and the CIA Bounce AAU program, has committed to California.
Brown selected the Bears over Clemson, Minnesota, and Vanderbilt.
“I’ve decided to commit to Cal because they’ve made me a priority,” Brown told ZAGSBLOG. “Coach [Wyking] Jones and Coach [David] Grace did a great job communicating with me, my family and high school coach. We were all on the same page. They came to school on a day I didn’t have workouts to speak to me about my future at Cal and what Cal has to offer.
“Cal being the No. 1 public university in the world, I’ll be able to get the best of both worlds, academically and basketball. My relationship with the coaching staff is personable, which was a huge thing for me. But also I’ll be able to come in next year and be utilized correctly instantly. The PAC-12 is a conference I’ve dreamed of playing in and it’s a conference I believe I’ll be able to excel in and showcase my abilities at a high level. Cal is the perfect fit for me and the best situation for me on the court and I can’t wait to help the team win and develop each day trying to reach my goals.”
Brown joins the tandem of four-star forward DJ Thorpe and three-star guard Charles Smith IV for the Golden Bears’ 2019 class.
According to 247Sports, Brown is a four-star prospect, ranked No. 93 nationally, and is the No. 4 player from Canada.
“Joel has elite level speed and quickness,” Brewster coach Jason Smith said. “He’s a tremendous defender and outstanding teammate. He’s someone any coach or administrator would love to have in their program, as well as college community. He possesses excellent leadership skills and is very strong, academically. “He’s well-liked by peers and faculty.”
