The San Fransisco 49ers worked out a handful of players on Tuesday afternoon, signaling a potential roster shake-up could be on the way. On Wednesday, the organization decided to do just that by bringing a veteran defensive back aboard.
According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Niners plan to sign free agent safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. The 2016 Pro Bowler and former first-rounder will add depth to San Fransisco’s back end on defense and will get his first shot in the league since September of last year.
Clinton-Dix, 28, spent less than five months with the Dallas Cowboys last summer after signing a one-year deal last April, worth $2.25 million guaranteed. After getting surpassed on the depth chart in training camp, he was released one week before the start of the regular season.
His stint in Dallas certainly isn’t a great sign moving forward, but the 49ers clearly saw something they liked during Tuesday’s workout. San Fransisco will at least give Clinton-Dix a shot for the next few weeks.

Clinton-Dix once was one of the most highly touted safeties in the NFL. Out of Alabama, he landed on the Green Bay Packers in 2014 and quickly blossomed into an above-average starter. He made the Pro Bowl in his third season and his future looked bright.
However, after the Packers exercised his fifth-year, $5.59 million option before the following year, Clinton-Dix’s performance took a steep drop. He stated to show less promise and was eventually traded to Washington seven games into the 2018 campaign.
He rode out the 2018 season in Washington before moving to the Chicago Bears in 2019. In the Windy City, he started all 16 games at safety, making 78 tackles and picking off two passes.
Since the Bears final regular season game in 2019, Clinton-Dix hasn’t seen any action in an NFL contest. Time will tell if that changes this year with the 49ers.
