John Lynch isn’t giving a timeline on a Brock Purdy extension—but he says talks have been “really good,” and the quarterback showing up to OTAs says a lot.
Another week, more speculation on the Brock Purdy contract situation. While there doesn’t seem to be any end between the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback, Purdy has arrived for OTAs, and nothing suggests he wants a trade, is dissatisfied with the organization, etc. Fans with decent memories of the last decade know what we are discussing.
For Purdy, it’s just that number above $50 million. So, where’s the middle ground for both sides to get this done?
Might as well ask the man who overlooks everything. 49ers general manager John Lynch was on Chris Simms’ Unbuttoned podcast, and the inevitable Purdy question was asked: Where are they in getting this deal done?
“We made it a practice not to talk about negotiations,” Lynch said before elaborating. “That goes way back when I was playing. I felt like that was my business; I didn’t want the world to know that.”
With that caveat, Lynch then went on with an answer that is pretty consistent with the “we don’t talk about negotiations” preface:
“What I will/can tell you is we are having really good, positive discussions. When it gets done, I’m not sure. Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. We’re making progress. We’ve had good discussions.”
Lynch discussed how Purdy has shown up for the 49ers’ OTAs, which is always something to point to with how discussions are going.
So, today’s word is “positive discussions.” The other consistency with this aligns with Diana Russini’s report last week about how things are “closer than we think.” If the sides were far apart or Purdy was dissatisfied with the organization, we’d probably not see him at OTAs (READ: Aiyuk, Brandon in 2024).
We probably don’t know how positive this is going, but if you look at past offseason contract brew-ha-ha’s that we’ve seen between the 49ers and their star players, this is about as smooth as fans could ask for. Lynch says it’s positive, and given what fans have experienced the past few seasons, nothing suggests otherwise.
