The San Francisco 49ers lost starting running back Raheem Mostert for the year due to a devastating Week 1 knee injury. After placing him on injured reserve, the team has found a new back to hold his roster spot.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the 49ers have claimed running back Trenton Cannon off waivers. Cannon was on the Week 1 roster for the Baltimore Ravens but was waived on Tuesday.
Cannon had two carries for five yards on offense and one tackle on special teams against the Raiders on Monday. He had 24 total snaps – nine on offense and 15 on special teams.
In four NFL seasons, Cannon has 50 carries for 151 yards and one touchdown. He also has another 20 receptions for 160 receiving yards.
Last year Cannon saw duty in the return game, averaging 29.8 yards per kick return.

While Trenton Cannon does have experience, he probably won’t be getting a big portion of the carries in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie running back Elijah Mitchell had a breakout game with 19 carries for 104 yards in the 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions.
Raheem Mostert had two carries for 20 yards before suffering his season-ending injury.
But the 49ers’ passing game was on point thanks to a big game from Jimmy Garoppolo (and a contribution from rookie No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance too). Their defense struggled but was able to hold off the Lions’ comeback attempt.
