Nick Bosa will start working in team drills next week.
The 49ers returned to the practice field Monday. According to the beat reporters on hand, both Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance both threw interceptions. Fred Warner picked Jimmy G off while newcomer Ha Ha Clinton-Dix intercepted Lance as he worked with the second-team defense.
The theme has been that Garoppolo looks more comfortable when it’s time to move the ball, and Lance is better during the earlier portion of 11-on-11 drills.
That remained true on Monday, per those on hand. Garoppolo went 10-10 and had a touchdown pass during his drives. Garoppolo started 2-7, making him 12-17 on the day. Lance had seven attempts, and he went 4-7.
As for the injury news, Trent Williams limped off the field late during practice. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he had his hip or knee clipped. Shanahan said the training staff isn’t “overly concerned” about Williams’ injury at first glance.
Jaylon Moore filled in for Williams once he went down.
Javon Kinlaw hurt his shoulder sometime last week during practice, per Shanahan. He’ll be week-to-week. Kinlaw had been in and out of practice, but we thought it was for a lower-body injury. That’s a player the 49ers can’t afford to lose.
I was looking forward to seeing Kinlaw go against the Chargers during the joint practices, but it doesn’t sound like the Niners first-rounder from 2020 will participate.
Left tackle Shon Coleman is day-to-day with a knee injury.
Wide receiver Austin Watkins is headed to the IR with a broken foot.
Nick Bosa will join the 49ers during team drills next week. Unfortunately, that means Bosa won’t practice or play against the Chargers later this week.
Shanahan said that Jauan Jennings is an old school receiver who the 49ers rib for his less than impressive combine stats, but has loved what he’s seen from him:
“Extremely impressed with Jauan. Plays like his hair’s on fire. A lot of our receivers can learn from him.”
That sounds like a receiver poised to make the roster. Shanahan raved about Jennings blocking and effort during the preseason game against the Chiefs on Sunday.
Shanahan said that he wanted reps for Josh Rosen with the third team during the first preseason game. It’ll be Nate Sudfield’s turn with the 3’s next Sunday against the Chargers. I’d expect Jimmy plays the first quarter, Trey gets the second, and Sudfield plays the second half.
