San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance made some noise in his preseason debut, but it doesn’t sound like he has shown enough yet to win the starting job for Week 1.
Last weekend, Lance completed 5-of-14 pass attempts for 128 yards and a touchdown. He wasn’t really efficient, but the crowd at Levi’s Stadium erupted when he completed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield.
Even though fans in the Bay Area are anxious to see what Lance can do with first-team reps, the 49ers continue to take a cautious approach to their quarterback situation.
Tim Kawakami of The Athletic is reporting that Lance wasn’t really given the opportunity this week to close the gap between him and Jimmy Garoppolo.
“This was one of Trey Lance’s last big opportunities to take big steps toward the starting job in Week 1 and safe to say that didn’t happen,” Kawakami said. “Zero snaps with the first team and the second team OL has trouble protecting him.”

Eventually, the 49ers have to hand Lance the keys to Kyle Shanahan’s offense. They invested so much in Lance and believe he has the right tools to become a franchise quarterback.
On the other hand, San Francisco shouldn’t rush Lance’s progression. Garoppolo is more than capable of leading the offense until Lance is ready to take over.
As of now, Garoppolo will most likely start the 49ers’ season opener against the Lions.
