A pair of duplicate numbers, which is a sign a player is unlikely to make the team, while Evan Anderson is no longer “nice.”
The San Francisco 49ers have six jersey changes with training camp underway, per The Athletic’s Matt Barrows. Newly signed wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown will wear No. 7.
That’ll also be the same number punter Thomas Morstead will wear. Morstead is the only punter on the roster, suggesting that St. Brown will need a new number if he makes the final 53, or is nothing more than a camp body while Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings are temporarily out.
The second set of identical number updates is No. 3. Wide receiver Malik Knowles will wear three, as will Jake Moody’s competition, Greg Joseph, who the 49ers brought over as a free agent from the New York Jets.
Unless Joseph crushes it in the preseason and somehow makes Moody expendable, the No. 3 should be up for grabs for any rookie or player looking to get out of their current jersey. We’re looking at you, Jacob Cowing.
Linebacker Chazz Surratt, another player coming over from the Jets, will wear No. 46. He wore No. 55 with New York, but that number belongs to Drew Moss and Sebastian Valdez. We’ll see if Surratt switches back to No. 55 if it becomes available in a little over a month.
Lastly, defensive tackle Evan Anderson is switching from No. 69 to No. 58. Anderson’s role as a potential run stuffer and player who could beat out Jordan Elliott for the backup nose tackle job is another training camp battle to watch.
