The 49ers are bringing back a familiar face at tight end for the end of the preseason.
The San Francisco 49ers have re-signed tight end Logan Thomas, the team announced on Thursday.
In a corresponding move, the team waived Tayler Hawkins with an injury designation.
Thomas, 33, was released by the team two weeks ago with an injury designation, as the tight end had suffered a hamstring issue earlier in camp.
A former quarterback who converted to a pass catcher, Thomas had 55 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns with the Washington Commanders last offseason.
After electing to not sign a deal early in the offseason, he reached an agreement with the 49ers right before training camp, but didn’t see much action before suffering the hamstring injury that led to his initial departure.
The 49ers tight end room currently consists of George Kittle, Eric Saubert, Brayden Willis, Cameron Latu, Jake Tonges, Mason Pline, and Thomas.
Hawkins had been with the 49ers over the last two seasons after initially being signed as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State.
While flashing at times, he had spent his time on the practice squad, which was the expectation once again, as the 49ers have Talanoa Hufanga, Ji’Ayir Brown, George Odum, and Malik Mustapha in the safety room.
The 49ers are next scheduled to play against the Las Vegas Raiders in their final preseason game on Friday evening.
