To make room for Eli Apple, the 49ers released Quintez Cephus. That’s a good sign for the young WRs on the roster
After the San Francisco 49ers signed cornerback Eli Apple on Sunday, there was no corresponding move. Today, we have that information. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus was released to make room on the roster for Apple.
The former fifth-round wide receiver felt more like a camp body than anything once he was initially signed. The move came directly after Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Cowing should return by the second preseason game.
Ricky Pearsall returned to practice on Sunday, and Jauan Jennings’s calf injury must not be too severe, which ultimately led to the release of Cephus.
Bringing Apple in might be more of an indictment of the non-starters at cornerback. Tre Brown, Siran Neal, Tre Avery, Darrell Luter, and Jakob Robinson make up the depth chart after Renardo Green — who is also out with a hamstring injury until Week 2 of the preseason — Deommodore Lenoir, and rookie Upton Stout.
It’s still early, as the 49ers will put on pads for the first time during Monday’s practice, but the secondary might have more questions than answers, at least for now.
Tarron Jackson was also discharged from the hospital on Sunday night. He returned to the team on Monday and will continue to be evaluated, according to Matt Maiocco.
