49ers Reportedly Signing Former Buccaneers Tight End

The NFL’s final cut deadline came and went on Tuesday afternoon, leaving many players around the league looking for new teams on Wednesday. The San Fransisco 49ers acted quickly and signed a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end to their practice squad this afternoon

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Niners will sign 26-year-old Tanner Hudson to the team’s practice squad on Wednesday. The three-year veteran tight end was waived by the Buccaneers earlier this week, but will now have another chance as a San Fransisco reserve in 2021.

Hudson arrived in Tampa Bay straight out of Southern Arkansas as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He was cut at the end of training camp that year, but was brought back onto the practice squad soon after.

Over the next two years, Hudson moved on and off of the Buccaneers active roster as he fought for playing time within a deep tight end group. He played in 20 total games during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, tallying five catches for 67 yards.

In San Fransisco, Hudson will be hard-pressed to make the active roster anytime soon. The Niners are comfortable at the position with former All-Pro George Kittle atop the depth chart. The organization also kept Ross Dwelley, who filled in admirably during Kittle’s injury-ridden 2020 season, and second-year man Charlie Woerner on the roster after final cuts on Tuesday.

Hudson will need to bide his time and wait for an opportunity to move up the ladder. If one of the 49ers three active tight ends goes down with an injury, the 26-year-old will surely get a chance to prove that he’s worthy of a spot.

San Fransisco will open the season in just over a week against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 12. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
