There’s a reason 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance has been the talk of the NFL since training camps began.
The former North Dakota State star has reportedly dominated practices, albeit while playing against the second-team defense. There’s momentum building that Lance will soon surpass Jimmy Garoppolo on the depth chart – and we’re just a week into practices.
Fans aren’t the only people hyping up Lance following his hot start at training camp. The latest to praise the rookie is none other than 26-year 49ers veteran reporter Matt Maiocco. In an interview on Wednesday, Maiocco didn’t just praise Lance; he called him the best rookie quarterback he’s ever seen.
“You’ve been covering this team and this league for a long, long time. Have you ever seen a rookie quarterback this special?,” asked 49ers radio play-by-play announcer Greg Papa.
“No, not even close. Not even close. No,” Maiocco answered. “And yes, I do want to pump the brakes. Let’s not get too carried away with it because they’ve only practiced in pads two days. But it’s everything. He just has the right touch. He’s acts like a seasoned pro. … Man he just looks the part.”
Brace yourselves, 49ers fans. The Trey Lance hype machine is off and running.

Has the Lance hype gone a bit too far this week? Sure. But reporters don’t often go out of their way to praise rookies when they don’t deserve it.
Everything we’ve heard about Lance suggests he’s everything the 49ers hoped he would be. The real question now is can he jump Jimmy Garoppolo on the depth chart? First, he’ll have to impress during the preseason.
Lance and the 49ers will get to work on Aug. 14 when they take on the Kansas City Chiefs in their first of three preseason games.
