The 49ers‘ quarterback competition between rookie Trey Lance and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is heating up in a hurry.
Kyle Shanahan had previously said Garoppolo would get all of San Francisco’s first-team reps. Lance got one – yes, just one – snap with the first-team offense on Tuesday, though. It was reportedly a designed zone-read, which confirmed the speculation Shanahan would implement specific packages for Lance which take advantage of his skill-set.
That wasn’t the only significant update out of the 49ers’ Tuesday practice, though. Lance also made what reporters have described as the throw of the camp when he rolled to his left and delivered a perfect 50-yard bomb to a receiver in the end-zone. Ladies and gentleman, the hype is real. Garoppolo’s days as the starter may be numbered.
Lance received plenty of attention on social media on Tuesday. Mina Kimes mentioned “every defensive coordinator on the 49ers schedule would rather face Garoppolo.” 49ers reporter Chris Biderman agreed based on what he’s seen during 49ers’ training camp so far.
Having watched all of camp so far, I’d agree. https://t.co/noSDZV15jB

This is significant, especially this early in training camp. Chris Biderman has been able to see Trey Lance up close and personal. Based on what he’s seen, he’d give the edge to the No. 3 overall pick over the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
It’s only a matter of time before Lance jumps Garoppolo on the depth chart. Some have predicted it will happen before Week 1. Others have forecasted a change during the regular season or ahead of the 2022-23 season. It’s starting to look like Lance is doing enough to challenge Garoppolo this very second.
If Lance keeps this up, Kyle Shanahan will have no other choice than to send Garoppolo to the bench.
